Paediatric First Aid

What is it?

 The Level 3 Paediatric First Aid covers a wide range of CPR and first aid skills, equipping the first-aider to administer first aid to children and infants.


This two-day course covers a range of CPR and first aid skills related to children, providing you with the skills to ensure a safe environment for children and infants.


The qualification is Ofqual accredited and valid for three years.


Paediatric First Aid is 12 hours and can be delivered over two consecutive days or can be split into smaller sessions and delivered over a 7-week period from the start of the course.


Emergency Paediatric First Aid is 12 hours and will contain some content from the list below - please ask for further details.


The course comprises practical work and theoretical classroom work, as well as a practical assessment on CPR and first aid.

What is involved?

 A range of subjects are covered, including:

  • Understanding the role of the paediatric first aider
  • How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
  • How to assess an emergency situation and act safely and effectively
  • How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction
  • How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is wounded and bleeding
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a suspected fracture and a dislocation
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a head, a neck and a back injury
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has been poisoned
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has sustained an electric shock
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has been bitten or stung

Prerequisites

Candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age at the time of taking the assessment. No prior first aid knowledge is required.  

The Assessment

The course comprises practical work and theoretical classroom work, as well as a practical assessment on CPR and first aid. All assessment criteria in the units must be achieved and will be assessed by your course tutor with a Multiple Choice Question Paper at the end of the day.

Renewal

In order to re-qualify learners must be assessed against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria in the unit. For PFA/EPFA this will be the same as the initial course of 12/6 hours respectively.
